What do I wear to this wedding?

I will be attending a wedding that begins at 2:30 P.M (church ceremony) and then cocktail reception begins at 5:30 P.M with dinner at 7:00 P.M The invitation states "black tie affair" and "adults only", my daughter, however, will be a flower girl. I have read that a man should never wear a tux during the day regardless of how formal the event is and a woman should never wear black that early either. However, the wedding continues well into the evening. What do we wear? Can my husband wear a dark suit and tie and do I have to wear a long gown or can I get away with a nice suit and evening top?

What do I wear to this wedding?
i would wear a gown and a tux for your hubby..here is some appropriate dresses

Reply:You can get away with the suit and evening top, and your husband the suit. As long as you look nice throughout the day, no one will think twice about it. Try something versatile, possibly a long gown with some kind of cover up ( or wear a shirt over the dress so it looks like a skirt) for the day and just take it off for the evening.

Just as a precaution!...

DON'T WEAR RED (a pattern outfit with a little red in it is ok)! Big insult to the bride. Red is an eye catching color and very sexy. It is her day to be the center of attention and as sexy as she wants, not yours.
Reply:He wears a tux, and you wear a gown - and preferably not black. Blame those who planned the wedding with a dress code for their guests!
Reply:it's their wedding- their moment/day or whatever. do what they want- it's just for a day. buy something, keep the receipt, and return it if you'll enver use it again
Reply:Traditions have changed over the years. It is now acceptable for a man to wear a tux to an afternoon wedding, as well as you wearing a blck dress.

I would suggest a suit for the ceremony, then change into the tux, if there is time. Alot of grooms wear a suit style tux, so maybe your husband should go to a tux shop, explain what time the wedding is, what time the reception is and that the reception is black-tie only. They should be able to find, instead of a tux, a suit, that is suitable for black-tie. Make sure he doesn't wear the same color tie, vest, etc.!!!!!!!

The black dress, again, totally acceptable. I would stay away from a gown, but maybe a "Tea" length dress or as you mentioned, skirt with nice evening top. If you go with a skirt, go the extra mile and buy something that you would wear to reception like this, and you'll have the skirt to wear to other functions, such as a nice Christmas party.
Reply:Take an extra set for the evening and change.

Use the bride's changing room. They will oblige.

Would not be proper to be in the same dress from 2 p.m. till 10 p.m.
Reply:It clearer states that they want you to wear black. So I dont see the what your questioning. I would ask some people that you might know are going. If you dont have that option then here is my personal advice, wear a grey/silver, below the knees dress at the ceremony and then change into a long black dress for the reception. As for your hubby... he doesnt have to wear a tux, but however they couple is again asking everyone to be in black tie. So make sure you put him in a black tie.
