Why do people think that religion is opinion only?

Also, why does no one ever actually listen to my arguement? But back to the original point of this question, a fact is something that when enough knowledge is obtained, every sane person will agree. For example, if something exists, but not everyone knows, it still exists, and it is a fact. And if everyone knew, it would still be a fact. For before everyone knew the truth, they had inadequate knowledge, and after they found out, they had adequate knowledge. And the true thinker's definition of "fact" never stated that it was not a fact before everyone knew. Anyway, an opinion, on the other hand, is something where anyone can justifiably disagree on no matter how much everyone knows. For example, it is okay to think that a certain flower is pretty, for it is in your mind, and there is nothing backing up the belief that you are wrong. But, to suppress another opinion would be wrong, for neither opinion is either right or wrong when faced with the laws of reality.

Why do people think that religion is opinion only?
Because it is opinion...

I agree with your statement about the difference between a fact and an opinion...but there's more to it than that. We have little evidence to support any theory.

When NO ONE knows something, its a belief. What you believe is based on what you personally find to be likely...its your opinion on what's likely. So while the truth is fact, the assumption is opinion.
Reply:They believe this because everything else in life is that way

People don't understand that it is not about religion. It is about Jesus Christ and His Word, the Bible.

Reply:because, when religion, and being accountable to an all-powerful, perfect being is just someone else's opinion, then the only person youre accountable to is yourself. this obviously makes no sense. there is such a thing as absolute truth, otherwise there would be no truth. my truth (the Bible) cant only apply to me, otherwise it wouldnt be truth. If there is no truth and no divine being to be accountable to, there are no morals. our society as we know it would be gone. but, seeing as how everyone adheres at least slightly to some list of moral guidelines, the world will not end. yet.

Try reading Frank Peretti's book, "Nightmare Academy". it is a very accurate portrayal of what would happen should truth be removed from our lives.
Reply:What facts are changes according to whatever dogma is winning at a specific time and place.

Some facts are hard to dispute like 1+1=2 or gravity being 9.8 meters /second squared.

Religeon is based on faith. If you beleive every word of the bible then that is fact for you.
Reply:Well, religion was made up by man. And I'm sure no one listens to your arguements because you write WAY too much. Try getting to the point next time.
Reply:Yes, God is fact though all do not know.
Reply:wow, your explanation had nothing at all to do with your question. people dont think religion is opinion, the KNOW it. if you state something you believe to be true without presenting any facts, then that is opinion
Reply:Well had I been there when Jesus walked on water I would have known, 2006 years later they keep saying he coming, for 2006 years they the religion been saying that, so my opinion is my opinion, it was mad up
Reply:Opinions that cannot be supported by evidence are subjective and have no validity to anyone other than the person who holds that opinion.

Religion and God existence are subjective opinions and are not facts, they are opinions.

It is a FACT that supernatural entities ("Gods") do not exist in FACT.

What may be or what could be, or what is possible are speculation, they are not facts.
Reply:If you have average intelligence and your mind is capable of logical interpritation. How can you possibly think christianity is a real and logical rendition of Salvation? I am 70 years old and was raised in the church. You would not believe the changes in one church since my childhood. The bible has not changed. Why is the present interpritation the right one? Could it be the Puritans had the correct interpritation of the word of God. I personally do not believe in God. No one with his power could be so cruel to his children. I see the preachers today chasing money and living off of the people who have Faith. Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell and most others are crooks. God, if he existed, would not waste his time talking to them. Jesus could never have a second coming. Bush would want a DNA test to prove his existance. Get real- When you die , you are dead ....Period.
Reply:It is opinion.
Reply:Lack of knowledge, Read "The Bible Codes" and you'll be flooded with proof. Fact: The entire bible (Five Books of Moses) was encoded. Fact: This encoding used mathematics common today and completely unknown 3500 years ago. Fact: The toga, sandal wearing, donkey cart pulling people that lived at that time had no shot at understanding, much less creating so complex a system of hidden information and answers. Fact: Only an intelligence far greater than anything we understand, even today, had to be responsible for this feat. You want proof.......there is proof (facts) available. Your search is simply not over!
Reply:the word christian comes from the word christ, there are two kindsof peoplethe believers and the non believers, the believers are usually born from believers and so are brought up to have faith and follow the christian religion the non believers usually are born of non believers and so do not know christ, christ did exist in reality history tell you so, god exists because we know he created this world though science says we came from a single cell can science tell us where did that single cell come from, but before christ and after christ, there are people who dont believe and you cannot impose your way of thinking or belief, its better leave them in their ignorance, jesus said love thy neighbour, and forgive thy enemy ten times ten, and leave the judging to god,
Reply:I understand what you are saying about opinion. That would have to do with personal preferences. The illustration of the flower was good. Some like roses, some like daisies. Both are valid opinions and neither one are right or wrong. ;-)
Reply:Religion is said to be opinion only because nobody can prove God exists or can prove the truth to any of the Bible stories. We believe it because we were taught to or because we want to.
Reply:It's only an opinion because there's no physical proof. Religion is a bunch of people who cannot deal with not knowing the answers to questions like; why are we here, where are we from, who created this ENTIRE universe, etc. It's the same type of opinion the Indians had when they summed up the concept of thunder to the Gods being mad. Just because someone told you something or you read literature doesn't make it true. It's all about physical proof, and our existence or a couple of books doesn't make a fact...it helps to form an opinion.
Reply:So in a sense you've answered your own questions then.

anyone can 'justifiable disagree on' (as in your definition of opinion), religion- 'now matter how much everyone knows'... i can know this because there are so many different religions and beliefs, even within religions there are different sectors who can not agree....

so if it was a fact then who are we to believe are the actual "right ones"? (according to your definition of fact, it still is a fact just not everyone knows).

so now that you've proved your own point, just because a lot of people agree on one thing how does that turn it into fact? is the world flat? many people years and years ago would agree- however this never made it fact.

religion is based on faith, so how can that be fact?, the pure meaning of faith is something that you believe in i.e. opinion.

you need to re think this question.......................
Reply:A flower is tangible. What hard evidence can you put forth that God or god or gods exist? Here's the tricky part. Anything you say will be your interpretation of what your God or god or gods represents to you.

Besides, atheists (generally) don't try to suppress theists viewpoints. The reverese is almost never true.
Reply:There's no opinion about it...God is real , he's not a "religion." It's all about having apersonal relationship with his Son, Jesus Christ.

Reply:Some people cannot think/see truth. They are blind to it, and live in an imaginary sort of place where whatever they think to be right is right (even if it's wrong), they cannot admit they might be wrong, they will say that the facts are only opinions, so they don't have to give up their cherished illusions.
Reply:I have to say that religion is opinion only for the fact that no god does interviews on Nightline. It is completely impossible to prove the existance of a divine being because they never give physical proof. I must point out that I am in no way atheist, if fact quite the reverse. I am the only priest of Set I have ever met. Religion is simply a set of opinions we use to explain the inexplicable.
