Best summer/fall shade flowers or plants?

I live in the northeast United States, and I'm looking for plants (to put outside) that can tolerate full to partial shade. I'm looking for summer and fall plants, (preferably one that lasts through to the fall) but if it's just for one season, that's fine. Any ideas?

Witch Hazel blooms in the spring however depending on the variety it will turn a beatuiful color in the fall, one variety turns orange, another yellow, and another red. There is also rose of sharon which has blooms that will last a while in the fall. Autum Joy sedum gets nice pink blooms that last for a few weeks in the fall. Chrysanthemums bloom in the fall and last for several weeks.
Reply:I live in Nova Scotia, Canada, and have a lot of shade in my yard.

My favorite plant is the hosta. They tolerate full sun with lots of moisture but perform best in part to full shade. They're grown more for their foliage but they do come with white and lilac flowers. The foliage comes in a wide variety of colors from plain green (light to dark), blues, and greens mixed with white and cream (variegated). They also come in a wide variety of sizes from dwarf (about 6 to 8 inches high and spreading not much more) to larger (about 18 inches and spreading at least that). The foliage looks wonderful spring through fall, with the added bonus that it turns a lovely golden color in the fall.

Bleeding hearts bloom in the spring and they die back after blooming. Check with a local nursery as there is a type called Luxuriant that blooms throughout the summer and can handle some shade.

Deadnettles are spring bloomers also but they look good after blooming. I have one that's called Beacon's Silver. It makes a nice groundcover. After the pink flowers die back, the greenish-cream foliage looks spectacular in the shade.
Reply:Two great plants are Wintergreen, which is a ground cover with bright green leaves and red berries...they are edible, and Hydrangeas. Hydrangeas are shrubs, about 4 feet tall with beautiful blooms that are usually blue, or you can make them pink. They bloom into the fall.
Reply:There are some beautiful Heucheras that do really well in the shade. They are perennial, even if you just need them for one year. Creme Brulee is a lovely coloured new variety. There's a link here to a site with photos, showing some of the colour ranges that they come in. They do flower, though their foliage is the main attraction. http://www.terranovanurseries.com/wholes...

Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob
Reply:I was once in your situation. Don't worry, everything will work out for you =)

A year ago I found this organization that gives people up to $1500 in renter or mortagage assistance! They operate in most US cities, I highly suggest you try to get some of this money.
