Is there a new species of rabbits in the United States?

My grandson found a tiny rabbit in our flower garden. The Little One sat and did not move so food was put in front of the bunny. The bunny stayed for a couple of days more. When visitors came and found the little one, there was an attempt to pick bunny up. The poor little one wiggled, go loose, and zoomed like a jack rabbit out of our site. Grandson insists the rabbit is a new species. Is there a new species of rabbits in the U.S. and do you think little bunny will return here?

It would more likely be an escaped pet if it was a small adult rabbit.

There are several domestic rabbit breeds which are tiny, such as dwarf lops (with droopy ears) and the Netherland dwarf.

These are actually the same species as the European rabbit.
